I'm not a tax or insurance professional, but as a Reiki practitioner, I'm frequently asked if Reiki treatments (or Chakra Balancing treatments) are covered by insurance. The short answer is unfortunately not for most people yet. My advice is always to check with your particular plan because there may be exceptions. Not long ago, I read that there are a couple insurance(s) which now cover treatments such as Reiki, provided you have a "prescription" or a note of medical necessity from your doctor.
The article was vague so, I don't know which insurance companies provide such coverage or if it is for certain situations or conditions only, but it's worth checking with your individual company.
It's unfortunate that integrative or complementary care isn't covered regularly for everyone who wants it. I think we should be able to spend our healthcare dollars where we want, on the type of integrative medical care we feel is right for us. That also is the regularly voiced opinion of many of my clients. But insurance is notorious for not covering much complementary care or even much allopathic preventative care.
Recently, Change.org circulated a petition aimed at insurance companies. The author hopes to encourage coverage of "alternative" (I prefer using complementary or integrative to "alternative") care treatments, particularly for patients with chronic conditions. I believe we will see a change for this type of coverage more widely as consumers speak up. Efforts by your integrative health care practitioners can't hurt, but as I understand it, any real change of this sort ultimately comes from consumer demand.
Until then, another helpful option is using your Health Savings Account (HSA); your pre-tax medical spending dollars.
I have clients who already use their HSA for their Reiki treatments, although some are now required to provide a note from their doctor for this option as well.
In my experience the typical register receipt for treatment service isn't enough for HSA approval under most plans. I provide a more detailed statement for my clients who need this type of documentation.
Yes, there are a couple hurdles, but they are definitely worth the savings these programs afford. It could be especially good savings for those of you who seek regular care.
Check with your HSA program now before open enrollment season.
It's the ideal time of year to ask if your stress relief treatments like Reiki or Energy Balancing are covered. If so, you have time to calculate your treatments in your HSA spending dollars for next year and take full advantage of this savings option.
There are government penalties for using HSA dollars for non-qualified expenses so, be sure to get the proper guidance from your HSA plan on what qualifies and if you need a doctor's "prescription" or talk with your tax advisor.
